WHO takes tough stand
against Sars outbreak
HONG KONG -- The World Health Organization (WHO)
yesterday warned against travelling to Hong Kong
and Guangdong province in China because of the
spread of Sars disease there.
About half the cases of severe acute respiratory
syndrome (Sars) have come from Hong Kong and
Guangdong. So far, the illness has been reported
in 22 countries.
Japan may consider sending
SDF to postwar Iraq
TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
said Friday that Tokyo might send its Self-Defence
Forces (SDF) to Iraq if requested by the United Nations.
Koizumi said that the SDF could help with rehabilitation
work in postwar Iraq in the event of a U.N. resolution
requesting Japan's participation.
