LDP candidate wins Kyoto governor's race

KYOTO -- Keiji Yamada appeared headed for victory after Sunday's election for Kyoto governor according to early results.

The victory is much needed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) coalition after last Sunday's loss in the Yokohama mayor's race. These elections and two more this spring are considered crucial for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's government.

Pakistan turns over al-Qaeda suspect to U.S.

WASHINGTON -- Pakistan handed over a suspected senior al-Qaeda member to the United States, the Washington press reported Monday.

The man believed to be Abu Zubaydah was turned over after being captured during last weeks raids in Faisalbad and Lahore. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry was not able to confirm the man's identity though.
