Koizumi off for China forum

TOKYO -- Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi departed Thursday for the two-day Boao Forum for Asia (BFA).

Koizumi will deliver the keynote address Friday at the forum on the resort Hainan Island in southern China.

LDP candidate wins Kyoto governor's race

KYOTO -- Keiji Yamada appeared headed for victory after Sunday's election for Kyoto governor according to early results.

The victory is much needed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) coalition after last Sunday's loss in the Yokohama mayor's race. These elections and two more this spring are considered crucial for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's government.
