Indonesia: Ready to work with new E. Timor president

JAKARTA -- Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Minster Hassan Wirayuda said Wednesday that Jakarta was ready to establish relations with East Timor. The territory held its first election on April 14 electing Xanana Gusmao as president.

Wirayuda congratulated Gusmao on behalf of Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri in a phone conversation and praised the East Timorese for holding peaceful elections.

Philippine rebels threaten to attack U.S. troops

MANILA -- Armando Liwanag, chair of the communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) ordered its armed wing to ''inflict severe casualities on the invading U.S. forces,'' the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported Sunday.

The order appeared in the New People's Army (NPA) most recent publication of Ang Bayan, which has been distributed in areas of the northern Philippines. The NPA is the military wing of the National Democratic Front (NDF).
