Manh elected Vietnam's ruling party chief

HANOI -- The ninth congress of Vietnam's Communist Party Saturday elected ethnic minority Nong Duc Manh, 60, as the new party leader, party officials said.

The reform-minded Manh replaces conservative Le Kha Phieu, 69, who resigned in the face of growing opposition to his rule.

The election of a minority to steer the country's ruling party is noteworthy as Vietnam has been taking steps to ease unrest among ethnic peoples in the central highlands region.

The party has been trying to revamp its image especially among Vietnam's younger generation.

Last year, a total of 112,882 joined the party over half under 30 years old. The party's total membership is 2.5 million in a country of 78 million.
