Manh elected Vietnam's ruling party chief

HANOI -- The ninth congress of Vietnam's Communist Party Saturday elected ethnic minority Nong Duc Manh, 60, as the new party leader, party officials said.

The reform-minded Manh replaces conservative Le Kha Phieu, 69, who resigned in the face of growing opposition to his rule.

Second day of fighting along Bangladesh-India border

MEGHALAYA, India -- Fighting broke out again between Bangladeshi and Indian security forces a day after the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) killed 15 Indian troops along the border.

Indian forces managed to drive BDR and Bangladeshi Army troops from Pyrdiwah village on Wednesday night in a bloodless operation.
