Bush: No to Aegis, maybe later

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President George W. Bush will not sell Taiwan the advanced Aegis radar system, but has approved the sale of submarines and destroyers, congressional sources said Monday.

Beijing had strongly resisted the sale of the Aegis system saying that it would destabilize the region.

Manh elected Vietnam's ruling party chief

HANOI -- The ninth congress of Vietnam's Communist Party Saturday elected ethnic minority Nong Duc Manh, 60, as the new party leader, party officials said.

The reform-minded Manh replaces conservative Le Kha Phieu, 69, who resigned in the face of growing opposition to his rule.
