Bush: No to Aegis, maybe later

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President George W. Bush will not sell Taiwan the advanced Aegis radar system, but has approved the sale of submarines and destroyers, congressional sources said Monday.

Beijing had strongly resisted the sale of the Aegis system saying that it would destabilize the region.

The sources said that Bush had not totally ruled out the request, and that the technology may be transferred in the future.

The items approved for transfer are eight diesel-electric submarines, four Kidd-class destroyers, 12 P-3 anti-submarine warfare planes and self-propelled artillery.

The P-3 aircraft are variants of the EP-3 involved in the collision with a Chinese jet fighter off Hainan island.

Tensions between China and the United States have been tense, especially after the accident. Chinese officials have expressed concern over what they feel is an aggressive policy towards China by the Bush administration.
