Estrada arrested for 'economic plunder'

MANILA -- Former Philippine President Joseph Estrada became the first chief executive ever arrested in his country's history when he was detained on charges of economic plunder on Wednesday.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo called the arrest an "historic moment" and presidential spokesperson Rigoberto Tiglao said the action showed that "justice is working in the Philippines."

Supporters of the former president, though, reacted strongly with about 3,000 gathering at the former government headquarters for fighting organized crime. They shouted slogans of "Edsa Three!" referring to the two previous Edsa revolutions.

The national Sandiganbayan court gave Estrada 10 days to respond to affidavits filed against him. Lawyers for Estrada may seek bail although the offense is reportedly non-bailable.

Estrada was forced out of office in the second Edsa revolution after charges of taking gambling and other kickbacks.

Even after his arrest, Estrada claimed he was still the legitimate president, and that he had only taken temporary leave of office after his support base collapsed.
