Japan pledges to write off bad loans

WASHINGTON -- Japan's finance chief, Masajuro Shiokawa, told journalists on Saturday that his country would move to clear bad loans to boost the Japanese economy.

Shiokawa came to Washington for the Group of Seven (G7) meeting here. This is his first foreign trip since Japan's new Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi appointed him on Thursday.

In a meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, Shiokawa also asked Washington to spur its economy.

Japan has cleared about ¥68 trillion in non-performing loans since 1992, and plans to write off another ¥32 trillion over the next two or three years.

Some experts think the total bad debt is much higher than the 32 trillion figure.
