Senate to probe Macapagal's husband

MANILA -- Veronica "Bing" Rodrigo said Tuesday that she had learned second-hand that Philippine President Gloria Arroyo-Macapagal's husband, Mike, had received bribes from a telecommunications firm.

The controversy surrounding the awarding of franchises to two telecommunications companies has placed the President in a difficult situation. She had lead the struggle against former president Joseph Estrada on grounds that he had plundered the nation.

The Senate led by Senate President Aquilino Pimentel, Jr. is investigating the allegations against Arroyo and Pimentel said they will question Rodrigo.

Arroyo claims that Estrada has paid unnamed military generals to destabilize the Macapagal government.

Bing Rodrigo was the appointments secretary of Macapagal when she claimed hearing the allegations against Arroyo. She resigned after she was herself accused of taking a bribe related to the same franchise.

She said that her sources told her that Arroyo and three others were paid to overturn a veto for the telecommunications franchise. The veto eventually survived.
