Japanese emperor appeals
for hostages' release
TOKYO -- Japan's Emperor Akihito Tuesday asked for the
release of three Japanese hostages in Iraq, according
to the Kyodo News agency.
Kyodo also said that the armed group that took the hostages
last week might use them as a bargaining tool for a
ceasefire between U.S. troops and Iraqi fighters in
Fallujah.
Al-Qaeda leader warns
of more attacks
DUBAI -- Arabic TV networks aired messages
from a top al-Qaeda leader Tuesday warning
of further attacks on the United States.
The taped messages from Ayman al-Zawahiri
shown on al-Arabiya and al-Jazeera networks sharply
criticized U.S. President George W. Bush and the
French ban on Islamic head scarves in schools.
