Ambushed foreigners found as war games begin

ANGELES CITY, Philippines -- A German national ambushed by suspected communist rebels was rescued Thursday and the body of his American tourist friend was found, military officials said. The ambush may have been timed to coincide with the start of joint Philippine-US military war games.

German national Siegfried Whitman and American Bryan Thomas Smith were attacked while trekking on Mt. Pinatubo on Wednesday. Smith was shot in the chest and the same bullet apparently struck Whitman's right leg.

Koizumi sacks FM Tanaka and Nogami

TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi Tuesday said he intended to sack Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka and Vice Foreign Minister Yoshiji Nogami after the two caused confusion in Diet proceedings.

The two ministers gave different versions of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmaker Muneo Suzuki's views on the participation of two nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) during the recent conference on Afghan aid.
