Manila set to defend war games before SC

MANILA -- Philippine Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes Wednesday said he would respond to a Supreme Court order to comment on a petition to stop the Balikatan war games.

The Supreme Court asked Reyes and Executive Secretary Alberto Romulo to respond to the request to stop the war games by lawyers Paulino R. Ersando and Arthur D. Lim, of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in Western Mindanao.

12 people detained in Pearl case

KARACHI -- Pakistani police Sunday detained 12 people in connection with the kidnaping of U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl. They dismissed claims that the Wall Street Journal correspondent was dead.

Police said that an email Friday claiming Pearl was dead and one on Saturday claiming he was alive were the pranks of a teenager from Lahore.
