Sri Lankan ministers resign over election

Two ministers resigned Friday from the Sri Lankan government in a dispute over candidates for upcoming local elections, Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) officials said.

Housing Minister Arumugam Thondaman and Deputy Livestock Minister Muthu Sivalingam resigned from their posts after the ruling United National Party (UNP) substituted some CWC for the March local elections.

12 people detained in Pearl case

KARACHI -- Pakistani police Sunday detained 12 people in connection with the kidnaping of U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl. They dismissed claims that the Wall Street correspondent was dead.

Police said that an email Friday claiming Pearl was dead and one on Saturday claiming he was alive were the pranks of a teenager from Lahore.
