Abdullah to succeed Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malayasia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad will turn over the government to deputy Abdullah Badawi late next year after reaching an agreement with the ruling party.

Until the transfer of power, Abdullah will be acting Prime Minister, Finance Minister and ruling party president for periods when Mahathir is on leave.

Asian nations send condolences after Iran quake

TOKYO -- Asian nations sent condolences to Iran after a massive earthquake killed more than 500 people and injured more than 1,600.

The earthquake was centered at Buin Zahra in the northwestern Qazvin province and measured 6.3 on the open-ended Richter scale.
