Tokyo to intervene if yen's rise continues

TOKYO -- The Japanese government said it would intervene if the yen continues to rise against the dollar, Economic and Fiscal POlicy Minister Heizo Takenaka said Friday.

Takenaka told reporters that Senior Vice Finance Minister Hidehisa Otsuji said that Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa would take steps to halt the yen's rise. Otsuji made the comments at a meeting of the Council on Economic and Financial Policy on Friday.

24 dead in fresh Gujarat violence

AHMEDABAD -- Violence erupted again Wednesday in Gujarat state killing 24 people and raising the death toll from sectarian fighting to 561 people.

Tensions flared after news spread of the stabbing death of a cook Tuesday in Mehmedabad in Kheda district. Police recovered 14 bodies from the town on Wednesday.
