Megawati reassures support for regional autonomy

YOGYAKARTA -- Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri Wednesday reaffirmed her government's commitment to the 1999 regional autonomy plan.

Megawati was responding to regional fears that her government would rescind the implementation of regional autonomy. The president did say, however, that the plan needed revision.

Beijing lambasts U.S. on 'human rights'

BEIJING -- China Monday released a report on the human rights record of the United States in 2001. The text comes less than a week after the United States issued a similar report on human rights violations in China.

The Information Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China published the six-point report. Beijing accuses the U.S. of taking the role of ''world judge of human right'' while distorting the record of other countries and ignoring its own rights-related problems.
