Indian Defence Minister Fernandes resigns

NEW DELHI -- Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes quit Thursday after a scandal involving one of his aides brought him under increasing pressure.

Another member of the ruling NDA coalition, Mamata Banerjee also walked out along with members of his party.

Fiji's Chiefs back Qarase, rule of law

SUVA, Fiji -- The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) voted Tuesday to support the rule of law and the administration of Laisenia Qarase.

The GCC, the supreme authority in Fiji, granted President Ratu Josefa Iloilo freedom to decide which course to take in restoring democracy to the nation.
