Philippine police gear up for May 1

MANILA -- Philippine police officials said they will deploy more than 6,000 officers on the May 1 anniversary of riots one year ago.

Protesters are expected to mark the attempted storming of the Malacanang presidential palace last year on Wednesday. Six people were killed in the riots.

BJP party heads worried over Gujarat

NEW DELHI -- The continuing violence in India's Gujarat state is worrying leader's of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian press reported Thursday.

In the most recent development, the police commissioner of the Ahmedabad city was replaced by the state director-general of police. K. Chakravarthy will assume most of the P.C. Pande's duties although the latter will remain in his position.
