Japan calls off retaliation against U.S. steel tariffs

TOKYO -- Japan will stop plans to retaliate for U.S. steel import barriers after Washington's moves to exempt nearly 40 percent of Japan's exports, Japan's trade minister said Friday.

In a statement released to the press, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Takeo Hiranuma said: ''We positively assess the US government's responses as a realistic and constructive approach based on the reality of the Japan-US steel trade.''

Japan, N. Korea to decide on talks by Sept.

PYONGYANG -- Japan and North Korea pledged to decide by September on when to restart talks on normalizing relations, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said Monday.

The two main sticking points in the negotiations are Japan's stance on its World War II actions and the abduction of Japanese nationals in North Korea.
