Heavy fighting in Jolo

JOLO, Philippines -- Fighting between government forces and Abu Sayyaf rebels continued Thursday with at least three people dead.

The battle between Abu Sayyaf fighters led by Raddulan Sahiron and the 1st Infantry Battalion began around noon on Wednesday.

Earthquake kills two in Papua

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea -- A powerful earthquake Monday off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea (PNG) killed at least two people, the Australian Associated Press reported.

The PNG Geophysical Observatory said the the early morning quake measured between 7.5 and 7.9 on the Richter scale. The Australian Geological Survey Organization measured 7.6 at 4:44 a.m. local time.
