Be very cautious in using stimulant laxatives like senna, castor oil and aloe vera. , Using too much can result in laxative dependency, and also possibly damage the nerves in the colon. ,

Prunes are a very mild stimulant laxative that tend not to cause the problems of other stimulants and may be recommended as long as they still are not used too often.

Generally it's a better idea to use bulk laxatives that involve indigestible fiber.

Simply increasing and carefully maintaining dietary fiber may due the trick for many people.

Make sure you don't allow yourself to get dehydrated as this sharply increases the chances of constipation. , Also you need a bit extra water when using bulk fiber laxatives like psyllium.

People who exercise tend to get constipated less, but don't overdo it. Especially be careful about straining at lifting heavy objects if you have constipation problems. , You can wear down the pelvic floor muscles important in achieving correct bowel movements.

Excessive coughing, pregnancy/childbirth and excessive straining at the toilet can also exhaust the pelvic floor muscles. For ease in bowel movements you might want to try getting a squatting chair or toilet. , Squatting is a much more natural way of defecating that involves much less straining than sitting.

Increasing mucilage in the diet and taking cholagogue herbs can also help. Mucilage helps keep the colon and bowels moist and lubricated, while cholagogues like dandelion and garlic promote the secretion of bile from the liver into the intestines.

Probiotic intestinal bacteria from yogurt, miso, and other sources is also important in easing constipation.

If you are having trouble passing feces try squatting on the toilet or in the shower. Irrigating the rectum with warm water or warm oily water also helps. As a last resort you can use an enema.

Pelvic floor exercise helps strengthen these important muscles. , Obviously only do these routines when the muscles are not strained due to heavy lifting, excessive coughing, etc.
