The I Ching is based on the idea of recurring cycles of change driven by the polar energies. Thus, negative, positive and also neutral energy are interacting and exchanging positions according to cycles of time. The I Ching attempts to replicate the permutations of these cycles in the 64 hexagrams which have a total of 64 squared permutations.

Putting it more simply, every possible situation one could find oneself can be represented by the interaction of positive, negative or a combination of both (symbolized by the moving line). Casting the yarrow sticks is based on the same principles of 'no-coincidences' and 'synchronicity' as other forms of divination. But the presentation in the form of the 64 hexagrams is unique.
