MIDWEST ASIAN AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANTICIPATES OVER 600 PARTICIPANTS

ANN ARBOR, MI - March 12, 2001 - The Midwest Asian American Students Union
(MAASU) will be hosting its annual Spring Conference at the University of
Michigan March 22nd through March 25th. Conference highlights include
keynote addresses by Professor Vijay Prashad, Director of International
Studies at Trinity College, and Grace Lee Boggs, civil rights activist and
author. The conference also includes over 25 workshops on various
contemporary Asian American issues. In addition, spoken word artists, I
Was Born With Two Tongues, and hip-hop duo the PACIFICS will be performing
at the closing banquet to be held at the Sheraton Inn in Ann Arbor.

MAASU 2001 Spring Conference aims to 'Empower' the Asian Pacific American
(APA) community by encouraging activism and increasing awareness, while
developing leaders and building relationships among university campuses.
By exploring progressive issues such as the labor movement, environmental
justice, and hate crimes, the MAASU Spring Conference is the primary
advocacy resource for Midwest APA college students.

MAASU, the Midwest Asian American Student Union, is a 501 (c) (3),
not-for-profit organization that strives to recognize the need for an
Asian American student organization which facilitates dialogue among
student leaders throughout the Midwest and addresses itself to all
pertinent issues affecting Asian Americans. This is accomplished through
its Fall Leadership Retreat, Spring Conference, and collaborative efforts
with issues affecting schools in the Midwest region.

The 2001 Spring Conference will be held on the University of Michigan
campus. It seeks to unite over 600 Asian American students from schools
across the country and Midwest to explore issues and current events that
affect Asian Americans. For more information on the MAASU Spring
Conference visit their website at http://www.maasu2001.org or call (734)
761-9935.
