Asian American Studies Program
College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Asian American Studies (Tenure-Track Position)
The Asian American Studies Program at California State
University, Fullerton is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position.
Applicants should be committed to an academic career that balances excellent
undergraduate teaching with original scholarship focused on some aspect of
the experiences of Asian Pacific American women.

Program
The Asian American Studies Program is a new, independent and growing
interdisciplinary program within the College of Humanities and Social
Sciences. Established as a minor-granting program in 1996, it began
awarding Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1999-2000. The program is governed by
the Asian American Studies Program Council, consisting of roughly 20 full-
and part-time faculty with teaching and research interests in some aspect of
Asian American Studies.

There is an active student organization and a strong working relationship
with the Women's Studies Program, the Departments of Chicano Studies and
Afro-Ethnic
Studies, the Oral History Program and the Asian Faculty Staff Association.
California State University, Fullerton is located near large Vietnamese,
Korean, Chinese and Filipino students of Asian Pacific ancestry.

Position Responsibilities
Responsibilities of the position are: Teaching a normal load of 4
undergraduate courses per semester. However, new tenure-track faculty teach
3 course loads for their first two years and subsequently may qualify for
other course reductions.

Establishing an on-going program of research or creative activity.
Advising undergraduate students.
Serving on the Asian American Studies Program Council and on other program
and university committees.
Helping to build a strong multi-disciplinary Asian American Studies program
that contributes to the APA community and that will achieve departmental
status in the foreseeable future.
Positive tenure and promotion decision require excellent teaching as well as
research, peer-reviewed publication, and participation in the broader
disciplinary community.

Qualifications
A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a discipline related
to Asian Pacific American women is required by the time of appointment.
Research specialties in one or more of the following are preferred:
Filipina, Vietnamese, Korean or Chinese American women.
Evidence of outstanding teaching is necessary.
Experience with service learning is desirable, as is experience with the use
of instructional technology.
Ability to teach a multi-disciplinary course in Asian Pacific American Women
and some of the following courses is required: Introduction to Asian
American Studies, History of Asian Americans, Filipino/a American
Experience, Korean American Experience, Chinese American Experience, Asian
American Cultural Expression, Asian American Psychology, Asian American
Families.
A multi-disciplinary and cross-racial/cross-community background in teaching
and research is desirable.
Research or service orientation in Asian Pacific American communities is
also desirable.
Rank and Salary:
This is a tenure-track academic year appointment. Salary is commensurate
with
qualifications and experience. Salary is subject to budgetary authorization
and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
