Asian, Latino Legislative Caucuses Back Cabaldon
Democrat Christopher Cabaldon has won the endorsement of the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus and the Latino Legislative Caucus.
If elected, Cabaldon will be the first Filipino American ever to serve in the California Legislature. Filipino Americans comprise the largest Asian American group in California and in the 8th Assembly District, which is 11.5% Asian/Pacific Islander and 21% Latino.
In addition to the 4-member Asian Caucus and the 22-member Latino Caucus, Cabaldon also has the support of area legislators, including Senator Michael Machado, whose new district overlaps more than 90% of the 8th Assembly District, Senator Deborah Ortiz, and Assemblymembers Darrell Steinberg and Barbara Matthews. He has also been endorsed by key higher education legislators such as Senators Jack Scott and Dede Alpert, and Assemblymembers Carole Migden and Elaine Alquist.
Cabaldon has also been endorsed by current and retired mayors and councilmembers, school and community college trustees, Democratic Party central committee members and club presidents, and business and community leaders in every part of the 8th Assembly District, as well as the California Labor Federation AFL-CIO, California Federation of Teachers, and California Faculty Association.
Cabaldon is Vice Chancellor of the California Community Colleges, the largest system of higher education in the nation. Cabaldon served two terms as Mayor of West Sacramento, where he led a successful effort to open a new local community college campus, revitalized the waterfront, and built the region’s professional baseball stadium, Raley Field. A member of the Speaker’s Commission on Regionalism, he is also a key regional and statewide leader on air and water quality, transportation, and protection of farmland and habitat in the Delta as a member of the Delta Protection Commission and the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board.
