JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Community Youth Leadership Coordinator

Asian Americans United (AAU) is a non-profit community based organization whose
mission is to mobilize people of Asian ancestry in Greater Philadelphia to
exercise leadership to build our communities & unite to challenge oppression.
Our social justice work includes grassroots community organizing, advocacy, &
youth leadership development and has focused upon
working class, immigrant and refugee communities.

AAU in South Philadelphia: AAU has been working for the past 15 years to
develop leadership in our communities. In the Spring of 2000, AAU opened an
office in the South 7th Street neighborhood - a multiracial , working class
community comprised of recent immigrants, & long standing multi generational
African American & white families. AAU in South Philadelphia seeks to build the
leadership skills of these diverse community members to create positive change in their community and to work with them to build the multiracial unity &
strength of the broader community. Towards this end, AAU supports
children, youth, & their families by promoting the educational development of
children and youth in a way that involves their families & affirms their
histories & cultures.

AAU is seeking a full time Coordinator to develop our Community Youth
Leadership Project (CYLP) in South Philadelphia. The CYLP engages
neighborhood youth in serving their communities & working for social
justice. It seeks to train youth to investigate social conditions, to
analyze issues, to articulate their ideas, & to work with others for social
change. This training takes the form of workshops & training sessions as well
as direct participation in planning & implementing a project or campaign.

Qualifications:
* Committed to community, political, and social change work,
* Possesses community organizing and/or teaching skills,
* Self motivated, able to take initiative, flexible, and able to work as a
team member,
* Ability to work productively amongst a culturally diverse community,
* Ability to communicate with multi-lingual constituents, Southeast Asian
language fluency preferred but not necessary,
* Experience working with youth preferred,
* Familiarity with Philadelphia neighborhoods and neighborhood issues
preferred,
* Administration and data collection skills,
* Proficient in basic computer applications,
* College degree or equivalent community experience.

Responsibilities:
* Implementing and building a South 7th Street Community Youth Leadership
Program which aims to develop the leadership capacity of high school aged youth
from the 7th Street neighborhood,
* Developing workshops and providing learning opportunities for young
people to explore issues of community, history, culture, and change,
* Teaching young people community mapping, surveying, visioning, and
organizing skills,
* Providing young people with opportunities to grow and exercise their
leadership skills,
* Supervising and organizing high school aged youth,
* Maintaining appropriate administrative and project oriented records,
* Representing AAU in community meetings and relationship building forums
as appropriate,
* Collaborating with other agencies and groups on related projects.

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience, starting at 25,000 plus
benefits.
