Hello All,

Please join us in Washington, DC as NaFFAA joins our partners at the
National Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans for Community Development, as
we screen an important film, 'The Fall of the I-Hotel'. The film documents
an example of diverse groups coming together and realizing their own power
in the interest of social justice and the perservation of a community. On
hand will be members of the San Francisco Filipino American community, who
were prominent in the struggle to save the International Hotel.

Maraming Salamat,

The National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development
Presents:

“The Fall of the International Hotel” - A Film Screening and Discussion

(Co-sponsored by National Federation of Filipino American Associations and
the Manilatown Heritage Foundation)

4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

“This film brings to life the battle for housing in San Francisco. The
brutal eviction of the I-Hotel's tenants in 1977 ended a decade of spirited
resistance. Almost 20 years since the International Hotel's demolition, the
former site of the heart of Manilatown and home to more than 10,000 people
in the 1950s, is still vacant.”
-- Judy Stone, San Francisco Chronicle

Today, the Chinatown CDC of San Francisco, a National CAPACD member
organization, is involved with the I-Hotel re-development project. The
project will result in a four floor underground garage, a Chinese language
school, and senior housing center -- scheduled to open in 2004. This
project exemplifies current efforts of Asian American and Pacific Islander
(AAPI) community development organizations across the country to revitalize
AAPI neighborhoods and build community infrastructure. A panel will discuss
the historical and present-day relevance of the I-Hotel struggle to the
Filipino American community and AAPI community development movements across
the country.

Speakers:
Frank Celada - Manilatown Heritage Foundation Board Member
Sandy Dang - Asian American LEAD Executive Director
Kerry Doi - National CAPACD Board Member, Pacific Asian Consortium in
Employment
Juanita Tamayo Lott - College student in 1970s who was part of the I-Hotel
community
