Dear Meida Friends:

Please find "how various APA communities voted in 2000" according
to the Survey, partially funded by NSF. That survey represenetd the best
scientific estimated of how the APa communities voted in the 200 election.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
11. Thinking about the November 2000 presidential election when Al Gore
ran against George Bush, did you vote in the election?

Chi. Kor. Viet. Japan. Filip. S. Asian All
Yes 41 34 40 63 47 36 44
No 59 66 61 36 52 63 55
Not Sure - - - 1 1 1 1

11a. [IF YES IN Q11] Which candidate did you vote for?

Chi. Kor. Viet. Japan. Filip. S. Asian All
Al Gore 64 44 54 56 54 49 55
George Bush 21 32 35 18 30 31 26
Ralph Nader 1 - - 2 2 2 1
Refused 11 23 7 18 9 18 14
Not Sure 3 2 4 6 4 - 4

Comment by S.B.: Results of item 11a says the following: Chinese
Americans voted the most pro-Gore, having a Gore/Bush ratio of
3.0. Viet-Ams has the smallest ratio of 1.6. The entire APA community
ratio is 2.1. 80-20 can be proud of delievering the 2.1 ratio. That
helps immensely in establishing our community's political clout with which
to win equal opportunity. That the Ch-Am community has the highest ratio
of 3.0 is probably due to the fact that about 70% of our e-mail enlisters
are Ch-Ams.

11b. [IF NO IN Q11] For what reason were you not able to vote? Were you
not a citizen, citizen but not registered to vote, or something else?

Chi. Kor. Viet. Japan. Filip. S. Asian All
Not a citizen 64 68 55 36 39 80 58
citizen, not registered 23 11 39 29 32 16 25
Not Interested - 2 - 14 8 1 3
Others (puny numbers)

Comment by S.B.: When some calculations are done based on the data
provided by items 11 and 11b, it says that

(1) About 50% of our community is composed of non-citizens, with Jap-Am
and Filipinos communities having notably less NON-citizens. The above
explains why the APA registered voter % is always only half that of the
population %. For example, nationally, APA population is 4%, but only
2% of voters in the election of 2000 are APAs. In CA, population is 11%
but voter % is only 6.5%.

(2) For citizens, 3.7 out of every 5 registered and voted. That is
considerably better than our national average.

One may conclude from the above that the ONLY viable way to increase APA
political clout to to encourge block-voting, because there is no easy way
to increase the % of APA registered voters, if half of our population are
NOT citzens yet.
