I am of Tongan heritage and as believed by all Tongans in the REAL Tongan culture is that we ruled over Samoa and almost ruled over Fiji (but they called for help from the Brittish and Britian defeated us with their guns) that is why many fijians like the Lau group have Tongan in them. Many Samoans have Tongan in them as well due to our ruling and have adopted many of our traditions into their culture. Originally we are a polynesian country having in real Tongan tradition no link with the Fijian tradition. Many Tongans have Fijian that may give them as you said more African like features though the real Tongans are very much polynesian with no link towards the Fijian society but that we integrate with them, only that the half Tongans and Half Fijians claim to be simply Tongan.
