Cuba's communist party says its in control

No matter what happens to recovering leader Fidel Castro, the Communist Party will remain in control, the Granma newspaper said Thursday.

Castro who turn 80 on August 13 is convalescing after undergoing surgery for intestinal bleeding.

Fidel Castro speaks during a mass rally in Cordoba, Argentina, July 21, 2006. Castro sees it as too early to judge his recovery from surgery that forced him to temporarily hand over power for the first time in 47 years to his brother, state media on Wednesday quoted him saying. His brother, Raul Castro, Cuba's next-in-command is effectively running the government in Fidel's absence.

His birthday celebration has been postponed until September but it may be difficult for him to fully recover by then given his age.
