Tropical Storm Ernesto strengthens in Gulf

In what has been so far a mild Atlantic hurricane season in comparison to last year's record-breaker, the fifth tropical storm of the year, Ernesto, gained strength Saturday and looks headed for hurricane status.

Ernesto could hit mountainous terrain in Cuba which could weaken or dissipate the storm. Otherwise it looks likely that Ernesto will reach the Gulf intact where condition are ideal for a strong hurricane.

The storm is due in central Gulf region where warm waters and low wind shear await sometime on Monday or Tuesday.
