France's Royal close to becoming first woman president

Segolene Royal moved closer to becoming France's first woman president after winning the Socialist Party's candidacy on Thursday.

"Together we are going to build something extraordinary. France is going to write a new page of its history. The country wants change. I want to embody that change," Royal said in a victory statement.

Polls currently give Royal a good chance of defeating right-wing candidate Nicolas Sarkozy.

Voters appear to be looking for a change and Royal has captured the imagination of many in the country.
