With the inaugural MTV Asia Awards set for
Feb. 2, Frank Brown, president of the Asian division
of the network said it is inevitable that Asian stars will
soon be in the international spotlight. Among the stars
nominated for awards are Sammi Cheng and Nicholas
Tse. Over four million votes have been cast online
in the first two weeks of polling.
The Indo-Reggae Asian Dub Foundation will
be playing at the Red Cross/Red Crescent benefit
for "Crisis in Afghanistan" in the UK on Dec. 15
& 16. These guys have always had a strong social
outlook.
The publisher Shinchosha Co. will be distributing
serialized novels via mobile phones in Japan according
to Asahi News. The service will feature segments
of 1,000 to 1,200 characters from the works of Naoki
Prize-winning authors Asa Nonami and Masumi
Hattori.
On the Indie front, Naked Brown Men: The Movie
has been moved to a 2002 release. The film will
follow the Debut in featuring all of the
talented Basco brothers. Newcomer Bob Bryan
will direct the movie.
The USA Network has signed Hong Kong director
John Woo to produce the light-hearted action
pilot Red Skies which will feature
the same hot martial arts scenes now turning up all over
the place. The feature centers around a high-kicking
female cop from mainland China played by Vivian
Wu. She is arrested after illegaly entering the
U.S. on the trail of a criminal and ends up as
an FBI recruit.
Seann William Scott is set to star opposite
Chow Yun-Fat in Bulletproof Monk
scheduled to start early next year. The story is
based on the comic book of the same name centering around
a Tibetan martial arts master played by Yun-Fat who
takes a city kid (Scott) as his student.
The Jackie Chan's Adventures video game
promises to be a big hit this Christmas. The
game is available on Game Boy Advance
and features high-tech animation, comedy and,
of course, martial arts as Jackie searchs the
globe for ancient artifacts.
