Of fame and fortune
October 29, 2001
There seems to be no end to the popularity of chopsocky films these days. Most impressive of
amongst the newest batch is the U.S. release of Iron Monkey directed by Yuen
Woo-ping of The Matrix and
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame.
Quintin Tarantino had tried unsuccessfully
before to bring this Hong Kong classic to U.S.
screens. But that was before the big Hollywood
trend in wire fu. Miramax took his advice this
time and will be offering more flying action films in
the future.
Other important releases are the hit martial
arts comedy Shaolin Soccer
and the sci-fi-enhanced The One
starring Jet Li.
Li teamed up with directors James Wong
and Glen Morgan and choreographer
Corey Yuen, a first-class team to be sure,
but the flick hasn't impressed the critics.
David Henry Hwang's retrofitted version
of Flower Drum Song opened
at LA's Mark Taper Forum on Oct. 14 and will be
playing until Dec. 2. The production stars gifted
Lea Salonga in a story about the
Asian American experience.
Chow Yun-Fat is negotiating
with Pandora Films for a part in
Augusta Trobaugh's
Sophie and the Rising Sun.
The story centers around the relationship
of a Georgia belle with a Japanese American
gardener before and after Pearl Harbor.
Chow's last director Ang Lee made
entertainment news again by casting unknown
Australian actor Eric Bana to
play Dr. Bruce Banner in the film
version of Marvel Comics The Incredible
Hulk. Bana will also have options for
two sequels to follow.
Jackie Chan was scheduled
to shoot scenes for his film
Nosebleed at the World Trade
Center on Sept. 11. He was playing a WTC
window-washer in the movie. The filming was canceled
due to a late script. "Well, I guess my
time is not up yet," Chan told the Hong
Kong newspaper Oriental Daily News.
May we count our blessings each day.
