In ancient times, pain relief could be obtained through a number of herbal concoctions.
For severe pain, strong drugs like opium, coca leaf or a shot of strong distilled liquor could be used.
Some milder options for the herbally-inclined include:
White Willow -- this contains the same active (but natural) ingredient used in aspirin. It is said to be gentler on the stomach than regular aspirin.
Garlic -- this all-around herbal cure works with some types of pain, and is supportive for nearly all types of pain.
Cayenne -- can be effective orally. Also used externally. A cayenne extract widely sold for topical relief of pain is known as Capsoicin.
Ginger -- works especially for cramping pains, or pains associated with inflammation. Can be used as part of an overall herbal pain formula.
Cloves -- works will with tooth pain or part of an overall pain relief formula.
Anti-inflammatories: used to reduce pain associated with inflammation.
Licorice -- be careful with this if you have high blood pressure.
Tumeric -- good for cramping type pains also.
Pineapple/Bromelain -- good for sports and other injuries.
Sedation: don't induce sleepiness unless the pain and other discomfort is also relieved or else you will be sleepy but unable to sleep!
Kava-kava -- one of the best ways to induce sleep while in pain. Kava-kava also has direct pain relief properties.
MASSAGE
Find area where unusual tension can be detected.
It may not be near source of pain. In fact, it can be the furthest part of the body away from this area.
Massage in and around area using oil or liniment with herbs like cayenne, eucalyptus, ginger, menthol, camphor, etc.
If the area is warm trying using vinegar also to relieve heat.
Try to bring area to back to normal without causing tension in other areas.
If you feel a "knot" in the muscle try to restore normal circulation to the area. The same thing if you see the veins bulging abnormally. There may be an area of obstruction "downstream."
