Martial arts didn't start to materialize in the U.S. till about the sixties. At that time, people only knew about martial arts from what they'd seen or heard about on TV or movies. The general public was for the most part ignorant on the topic, with the exception of a few. Then along came John_C_Kim in the mid/late 70's. Martial arts were still up and coming in the states and Johnny boy saw that Bruce Lee and those like him were making their way into Hollywood. Still, not many knew too much about the martial arts. Today, martial arts knowledge has increased and there are just as many non-asians in the arts as there are asians. This is why O_Y_D has gone downhill in recent years and lost credibility. People back then were not familiar with lineages and the history of the arts. Now there are many books on this subject. People can now easily distinguish the fakes from the facts. O_Y_D is finally seen for what it really is....a phoeny Bull@hit martial art!
