One style I practiced in for a while would begin with some warmup/conditioning drills and generally go right into techniques either paired of with partner switching and the instructor trouble shooting or clarifying things then progressing in that class to practicing with light resistance finally as used as offensive moves or as defenses to given or random attacks, if time permitted with senior and advanced students (with students either seating themselves or being seated according to ability) sparring fairly freely. They still couldn't go full blast on completing all the techniques, but the full resistance, especially on the wrestling style ground techniques, made for a good workout and allowed the students to experience first hand some of the difficuties and caveats in application. Forms were taught more rarely and it seemed were of more interest to the senoir or very capable beginners who practiced them mostly on their unscheduled time with the instructor sometimes offering correction. Is this unusual or fairly common?
