Wushu in the Shaolin Temple used to be taught on a 'master-apprentice' basis, and the
secrets and fine points of certain fighting techniques were known only to the master and his
apprentice. As 'outsiders' were barred from acquiring these techniques, this traditional
method of teaching was not conducive to the development of wushu in general. To change
this situation, the temple set up a special research team not long ago to study the various
traditional forms of Shaolin wushu, including xingyiquan, dahongquan, xiaohongquan,
laohongquan, xipingquan and tongquan and other unique styles of traditional Chinese boxing
and exercises with weapons. Many monks who had mastered the orthodox Shaolin school of
wushu but who had later returned to secular life have now expressed their willingness to
come back to the Shaolin Temple.
