Hello. I'm a student of Yang Style Tai Chi Chu'an for about 5 years since college and although have never competed, most of my associates have begun training in Northern Long Fist and spar frequently.
However, we heard about the 'international level' program at School of (name doesn't take here?? dont know why) and it is pricey!
The sensei there (got real upset ??? when my friend said 'sensei' as outward resepect even though he is quite accomplished) seemed out of breath after showing just a few of the moovements they call 'form' and how its a better way to develop mentally and physically. Must be difficult internally, perhaps.
We invited him to come by where we practice but he said he was usually pretty busy. There wasn't any students present that we saw, but may be they teach the higher level stuff privately. Some of the better places cater to the more serious student, must be more that way there.
They wouldn't let us try the higher movements, we had to be in for awhile. That sounded o.k. as better teachers select those who'll teach over time when they prove out. It should not be just about money.
Questions about weapons training were rebuffed almost insultingly. But some blackbelts are touchy that way. Besides its his place. He seemed to nod his head slightly when entering the room, that seemed odd, not sure if practicing a visualation technique but it was wierd.
We have a collegue who is at one of the area locations for almost a year, (we didn't mention) who he goes into a frenzy almost like a zealot - his eyes wild with enthusiasm making it difficult to gain an objective view of what is taught there. He says he really likes it although he doesn't go very often. He's a bit missing, no family or frends beside a few at work or this school now. That place is helping him in some ways but we hope its not just another cult.
Based out of a nearby test field and when not flying wanted to experience more of what's available. Income isn't the concern so much as paying too much for something. Longfist training has been great, more just curious.
If anyone here has some experience (not just stock opinion please, asking for those that have tried it) pro/con on the higher level training we'd appreciate your candid views - what seemed to work, what doesn't and whether or not you think your self defense improved measureably.
In our line of work what with terrorists, etc other styles of addtl training could be useful.
Thanks.
