Nope, just living shelterd lives. Martial Arts, self defense, means different things to different people.
Some people do fine with just empty hand practice. I find it a little hard to consider that a 'traditional' martial art, much less any sor of Ancient Royal or even complete System.
It's one of the things that let's a martial artist of some experience guage who they are talking to.
And to be honest, it's more likeley, in most people's lives, that they will be in a simple fist fight of nonfight with no extra weapons.
But it's equally true that in suburban America, for most people, that they will get into no real physical conflict.
The martial arts strenghten their minds and bodies (one must hope, anyway) to help them cope with the more relentless challenges to their well being, their lives.
Poor health, the stress of being vexed by everything because of mental weakness, or allocating resources and prioritizing things incorrectly, these are the killers for many.
If you lose a tooth, break a rib or even take a bullet in a fight, does it kill you? Not usually.
Does it hurt? No doubt.
Does the pain of any of the above equal that of a wasted life? I doubt it.
Correct weapons practice just multiplies the intensity and benefits of training in martial arts.
Besides those benefits above and the obvous benefits in really combative situations that having well rounded correct, weapons traing and practice confer, is the plus of realizing a litlle on on one or two or whatever fist fight is no big deal, in the scheme of things.
Keep practicing.
P.S. How's the Ruger holding up?
