A novice at what... trolling on the webboards? If that's not your intent, why on earth are you looking for advice on these sites?
If you are a total beginner, go to the nearest school, it doesn't even matter what style or art it is for a while, just go everyday and learn and practice. That the place is nearby or on a route you travel often is important.
The reason that I harp on that so much is so you will understand practice of martial arts... not just a bunch of words about styles that are really too involved for a casual observer to understand much about.
After some good effort at practice, practice and practice, and, depending on what you're training for, either some fighting experiece or tournaments, if you feel you could find something more beneficial to yourself, go shop around. Try other schools.
