Choi, Yong-Sul
(1904-1986)
taught
Yoo Sool which was an art practiced in Korea a very long time ago and renamed it Hapkido (his yoo sool may have more to do with Daito-ryu aiki jujitsu than straight from original yoo sool sources due to the factor you mentioned. However there is some evidence that a military governor during a previous japanese ocupation of the Korean peninsula 500 years or so earlier learned yoosool and built the forunner of or an art strongly influential to jujitsu, which Daito Ryu Aikijujitsu is a flavor of.
He is considered by virtually everyone to be the father of modern hapkido. He studied in Japan before and during WWII from:
Sogaku Takeda
(1859-1943)
Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu
who also taught Daito Ryu to:
Morihei Ueshiba
(1883-1969)
The blessed founder of
Aikido
