The school I went to taught a few northern shaolin sets as well as hung gar and yang style taiji. The shocking thing about the school was exactly who could do what forms. The younger students could do all of the cool jumps and long forms, but anyone over 40 basically had no chance at learning these because their body would not be able to take the movements.

I talked to some of the students who had been there for a long time (ten years or more) and they all said the same thing, that they could not do that type of training anymore (although they would still try) so they focused on the taiji. Myself being young, I would hope to avoid what a lot of people have to go through. After all, who wants injuries and to lose the skills you work so hard to get.

I understand that this happens to everyone eventually in sports and martial arts but when I started OYD I noticed that even the older students were able to do the forms well. The forms are not any less athletic than the kung fu I learned before so something else has to be going on. I believe that the movements do not shock the body and they follow the principles of nature (yin and yang).

Nobody in the school is superman and nobody in my old school was a master either. I just feel glad that there is a school that can develop the body for the long term rather than just for the prime of youth.

Everyone has something different to say about OYD and that's ok, I just think that its funny what some of you have to say when someone disagrees with you. Maybe in your world I am not allowed to think for myself...too bad you are not in charge.
