Here's stuff that I've learned or am learning to watch out for when I spar. Thought I'd share to save anyone else some grief in their own training. Share more if you can think of some.
-Blinking when attacks come in is bad.
-When the opponent is coming in or you are moving into close range to the opponent, do not reflexively lean your body backwards in order to minimize risk of hits to the head. This only messes up your balance and leaves your lower body exposed.
-Always effect your opponent. Never do anything that does nothing to your opponent.
-Offence is the only real defense.
-Be able to change targets at will, and never attack exclusively one area(like constantly attacking the head), as this makes you predictable.
-Footwork is half the game. If you are just standing there, and moving your arms, you are failing to embody your training, no matter how much power your hands can achieve.
-Power is nothing if it cannot reach its target.
-Speed is nothing if your timing is bad.
-Timing is nothing if your technique is not confident.
