when there is no actual sword involved it would be more appropriately called something besides kendo (ken=sword, that term was actually coined a good while back and literally refering to an earlier type of real sword than most people associate with Japanese). But it was kenjutsu. That may seem different now. Mushsashi or Tesshu have offered some interesting insights in to this. Also that's changing, having seen some high ranking modern shinaido-kendoists learning how to cut and such. Most of the higher ups in the sparring (kendo) emphatic associations have real swords that they cut with now. Not always competetively but some do.
