Very interesting. I was back in the mid 90's for a sort spell at one of the schools that broke away, and I got the same thing.
Later I had a phone converstion with Mike Battaglia about returning, and based on the conversation I decided that returning to Master Tsai's family would be a considerably harder workout. It sounds like they [moo]really watered down the intensity levels. At Iron Fist (Run by one of Tsai's decendants) noone there told me to 'Back off' at all, and I was allowed to do the 'Black Sash' workout so long as I could keep up. It was the toughest workout I had been in since the late 80's Chung Moo, only it was designed to enhance your fighting at the same time as develop your body. I actually structure my own teaching after my time with Mater Tsai's family today as it was very productive.
One other thing I liked was the fact that they gave us curriculem sheets that listed what we were doing for each level. I only have the one from the Black Sash curriculem (Preps students for Back Sash test), I lost the others :(
If you want that super hard style of training, where you push yourself to the limit, you need to find a good Chinese Long Fist school, or a Northern Shaolin program like the one I teach.
