I have done a great deal of research in to the history of Polynesians as a whole, as a part of a project for the company i work for.

Their is some historic evidence that the Tongans did have infrequent contact with the Hawaiians. This contact was most likely adventurers, or merchants/traders. Samoans were once subjects of the tongans (i am truely sorry for affending any one here) it is entirely possible that a Samoan Adventurer/navigater traviling with a tongan merchant discovered the riches of the Hawaiians and returned to Samoa to form a war/raiding party to return to the big island.

As to this being impossible is also a strech. It takes only four weeks to sail from Fiji to North Land, NZ. If you hopscotch islands north instead of east it should only take 4 to 6 weeks under sail power allone, with no need to row. All islanders knew how to stock their war boats and would not need very much in the way of restrocking on the way to their attack sight.

With this said if this type of conflict did happon, which is possible, would have been rare. I have come accross some oral history that does point at forgien attacks on Hawaii, but weather that is Tongan, Samoan, or tahitian is not know yet. All we do know is that the Tahitians Stayed in Hawaii.
