The Yamato Dynasty, established in 660 BC according to traditional dating, is the oldest living dynasty in the world. According to two official records of the 8th century AD, Jimmu, who was said to be a direct descendant of a sun goddess, was the first ruler and founded the Japanese imperial line. Historically the Yamato dates to the 4th century AD still older than other living dynasties. The shoguns and samurai nobility ruled the land, until in 1876 AD, Emperor Meiji, abolished the wearing of swords, thus ending the samurai class after nearly a millennium of history. Today the Emperor is a constitutional monarch whose rule is mainly ceremonial and diplomatic.
